The year 1989 marked the beginning of a three-year surge in American Silver Eagle mintage. Following a dip in popularity in 1988, the coins rebounded in 1989 and initiated a streak of three consecutive years of increased production. The mintage of 617,000 coins in 1989 for Proof American Silver Eagles stands as one of the highest in Silver Eagle history for a single year. Notably, the Mint did not witness proof demand reach this level again until the 2000s.
