1/2 oz Lunar Silver Coins
Some of the most popular silver coins on the market are Lunar-themed coins. These coins will bear the image of an animal which coincides with the Chinese zodiac.
- Pitcairn Islands: In 2024, the Pitcairn Islands, with production by the Tower Mint, issued lunar-themed coins for the Year of the Dragon. For the 1/2 oz weight, there’s both a BU coin and a proof coin with mintages of 20,000 and 3,000 respectively. The dragon is seen flying in right-profile relief alongside cherry blossoms and tree lanterns.
- Samoa: Struck by the Scottsdale Mint, these coins are issued from Samoa. For the 1/2 oz weight, three different strikes are available, proof-life, rhodium plating, and antique. The dragon is seen flying across the design field as the traditional Chinese character for the dragon is also shown.
- Perth Mint Lunar Series: The most popular series of Lunar-themed coinage comes from the Perth Mint. The original Lunar Series started in 1996 with the Year of the Rat, coins have been issued annually in several sizes and variations since then.
- Tuvalu: Also struck by the Perth Mint, these coins have a face value backed by Tuvalu. The reverse features the Lunar animal as a colorized baby version of that animal. These coins are proof strikes arrive in a display box with a Certificate of Authenticity.
1/2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad
The Mexican Silver Libertad is among the most well-known silver coins on the market today. These coins were first issued in silver in 1982 as the first silver bullion coin to be introduced to investors. 1/2 oz coins were first struck in 1991 and have been issued annually since.
The obverse showcases the Mexican coat of arms. This features the Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus wrestling with a rattlesnake in its mouth and talons. The reverse of these coins shows a depiction of Winged Victory. She’s seen holding chains in one hand and a wreath crown in the other.
BU coins will arrive in protective plastic flips. Proof strikes are also available, they’ll be shipped in protective capsules.
1/2 oz Armenian Silver Noah’s Ark
This series began in 2011 and is produced annually by Geiger Edelmetalle, the oldest silver trading house in Germany. The 1/2 oz option is available in .999 pure silver with a face value of 200 Dram, backed by the Armenian government. Coins are available in protective plastic flips, tubes of 20, or boxes of 500.
The obverse of these coins showcases the national coat of arms. This unique emblem blends Armenia’s past symbols showcasing both elements from their Soviet-era history, and the ancient Kingdom of Armenia. The reverse of these coins features Noah’s Ark. The ark is seen floating on peaceful waters while Mount Ararat is seen in the background.
