The obverse of these Mercury Dimes features the Winged Liberty design. The design entails a young Liberty with a winged cap on her head. The resemblance to the Roman god Mercury was uncanny, and the dime quickly became known as the Mercury Dime for that reason.

Reverse

The reverse of the dime features Roman fasces wrapped in the olive branches of peace. The reverse design was also the work of Adolph A. Weinman who entered the competition to create new coinage depictions for U.S. coinage.

History

The Mercury Dime was minted from 1916 to 1945. Also referred to as the Winged Liberty Head Dime, the coin got its name Mercury from its resemblance to the Roman god Mercury who often wore winged shoes or hats. The dime was eventually replaced after the passing of President Franklin D. Roosevelt with a dime that honored the former President.
