Product Description

Introducing the British Gold Sovereign, a historic coin first minted by the Royal Mint in 1489 during King Henry VII’s reign. Originally valued at 21 Shillings, these gold coins were deemed too precious for everyday use. Since 1817, the Royal Mint has consistently minted gold sovereigns, each representing the current monarch. Now, you can acquire Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins from the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Comes in protective plastic packaging!
  • Features the iconic “Young Head” design issued between 1837 and 1887!
  • Contains .2354 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Obverse showcases a left-profile portrait of Queen Victoria I.
  • Reverse includes either the Crowned Shield or St. George design.

Every Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin in this collection showcases the Young Head design of Queen Victoria I. Originally minted from 1837 to 1887, these coins are securely housed in protective plastic.

Obverse

Queen Victoria I, reigning from 1837 to 1901, surprisingly maintained a consistent obverse design throughout much of her rule. The Young Head bust depicts a youthful and elegant Victoria I without a crown, with her hair pinned up at the back in a left-profile portrait. This design remained in use on the Great Britain Gold Sovereign from 1837 to 1887.

Reverse

While the obverse design remained constant, there were variations in the reverse of Great Britain Gold Sovereigns during Queen Victoria I’s rule. From 1837 to 1871, the reverse featured a crowned heraldic shield, quartered with the three lions of England and symbols representing Ireland and Scotland.

History

In 1871, the Royal Mint reintroduced the original St. George and the dragon design for the reverse of the Great Britain Gold Sovereign. From 1871 to 1887, both the Young Head Victoria I design and the St. George design coexisted on these coins, marking the only time two different types of gold sovereigns were simultaneously minted.
