Obverse

The obverse of the 2021-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle features the iconic image of Lady Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty is shown stepping forward with confidence, holding a torch to represent enlightenment and an olive branch to symbolize peace, with rays of sunlight extending behind her.

Reverse

On the reverse of this coin is the original family of American bald eagles design, appearing on the Proof Gold Eagle for the final time. Designed by Miley Busiek, the scene shows a male eagle flying back to the nest while a female eagle protects a young hatchling below.

History

The Proof American Gold Eagle lineup for 2021 includes two distinct versions of the same dated coin. Coins released in late 2020 and early 2021 retain the original reverse design that has been used since the series began. Later in the year, production shifted to coins bearing a new reverse image, making the earlier strikes an important final appearance of the classic design.

As part of the 35th anniversary celebration, the United States Mint chose to refresh the reverse artwork on both the Gold Eagle and Silver Eagle series. Before the new designs were introduced, the Mint continued striking coins with the original imagery, creating a brief overlap year that offers collectors a clear dividing line between old and new designs.
