Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic Lady Liberty portrait from 1907 is featured on the obverse of the 2021 1/4 oz Gold Eagle Type 1 Coin. The design, which was revived in 1986 for the Gold Eagle series, shows Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch and an olive branch in her hands.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2021 American Gold Eagle Type 1 Coin showcases Miley Busiek’s artwork of an American bald eagle family. The male eagle can be seen carrying an olive branch in its talons as it flies over the nest where the female eagle guards the hatchlings.
History
The mintage of American Gold Eagles in the 2021 Type 1 release had lower mintages than the Type 2s released later in the year, with the 1/4 oz gold coin the second lowest in both issues. The 1/4 oz Gold Eagle had a Type 1 mintage that was one-third that of the 1/10 oz coin and one-eighth that of the 1 oz gold coin.
