Obverse

In the obverse design of the 1970 South African Gold Krugerrand Coin is Paul Kruger. Paul Kruger is the former president of the South African Republic, serving from 1883 to 1900. He would eventually die in exile in Europe following the Second Boer War against Great Britain.

Reverse

The reverse side depicts a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa, designed by Coert Steynberg. The coin does not have a denomination but is considered legal tender in South Africa.

History

From 1967 to 1979, the South African Gold Krugerrand was offered only in this 1 oz gold options. Starting in 1980, the South African Mint introduced fractional-ounce coins in the series. This new range of options included the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins.
