The 2008-W 4-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Coin Set comprises four coins released in 2008, available in fractional weights of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Each coin is individually encapsulated and presented in a display box with a Certificate of Authenticity. As proof coins, they feature frosted designs over mirror-like background fields.

Obverse

On the obverse, you’ll find Lady Liberty, an iconic design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens originally created in 1907. Liberty strides forward, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.

Reverse

The reverse features a family of bald eagles, an exclusive design to the Gold Eagle Series by Miley Busiek. It depicts a female eagle in the nest with a hatchling as a male eagle soars overhead with a branch in its talons. Produced by the United States Mint, these Proof American Eagle coins bear the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.

History

Proof American Gold Eagles did not initially consist of these four weights. The 1986 issue offered only the 1 oz gold coin, with the 1/2 oz gold coin added in 1987. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins were the final introductions and debuted in 1988.
