Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of 2023 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins for the final time. With Her Majestys recent passing in September 2022, this 2003 depiction of the Queen in right-profile relief by Susanna Blunt is now the final effigy of the Queen for Canadian coinage. 2023 is the last time Her Majesty will feature in this series.
Reverse
A sugar maple leaf is depicted in the reverse design of the 2023 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf. This beautiful depiction of the sugar maple leaf has featured on all coins in this series since 1979, including the more recently introduced silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin. It was created by Walter Ott.
History
The Canadian Maple Leaf bullion series has never featured a monarch other than Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse field. Her record-breaking reign saw her grace countless forms of bullion and circulation currency in Britain and throughout the Commonwealth. These early 2023 Maple Leafs are the last to feature her portrait before the transition to those 2023 Maple Leaf coins with King Charles III on the obverse.
