On the obverse of the 1988 4-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Set, each coin features the image of Lady Liberty, a design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Commissioned by President Roosevelt to create a new design for American gold coinage, Saint-Gaudens depicted Liberty confidently striding forward with a torch and an olive branch. 1988 marks the first year in this series to feature four weights for Proof American Gold Eagles. The collection debuted in 1986 with only a 1 oz gold coin. This was followed by the introduction of the 1/2 oz coin in 1987, and the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.
