Obverse

Lady Liberty is on the obverse of the 1857-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin. This design from James B. Longacre was created in 1849 for the release of the very first Double Eagle. It shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown, a ring of 13 stars, and a date mark.

Reverse

A heraldic eagle is depicted in the reverse of the 1857-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins. This image captures the American bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield and a ring of 13 stars overhead. The eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, with sun rays connecting its wing tips.

History

The Type I design is Longacres first iteration of the reverse design. In 1866, he amended the design to include IN GOD WE TRUST within the ring of 13 stars on the reverse. In 1877, after his death, the denomination was changed from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
