History

Built in 1910, the Angel of Independence is a majestic monument that has inspired the artwork of the Mexican Libertad coins since their inception in 1981. The monument, which is located in downtown Mexico City, was built by Antonio Rivas Mercado to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Mexican War for Independence. The statue of winged victory first appeared on the Mexican Centenario gold coins of 1921, which in turn inspired the Libertad design 60 years later.
