Obverse

On the obverse side of 2023 South African Gold Krugerrand Coin, you will find an effigy of Paul Kruger. An influential Boer figure in the 19^th century, Kruger played a vital role in the formation of the South African Republic. He would eventually serve four terms as the President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1902, dying in exile in Switzerland in 1904.

The reverse field of the 2023 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand Coin depicts the national emblem of the modern Republic of South Africa. The animal is shown in right-profile relief with the savanna stretching out behind it on the horizon. This design was used as early as the 1930s on South African currency.

The coins were only available in 1 oz gold through 1979, establishing a dominant position in the gold bullion market by 1980 that saw it control 90% of the market. In 1980, fractional-ounce coins were introduced.
