Reverse
In the reverse design of the 1996-P 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle, you will find the image of the heraldic eagle. Created for this series in 1986 by John Mercanti, the design shows the eagle in front-facing relief as it supports the US national shield.
History
The Proof American Silver Eagle Coin had a mintage of 500,000 coins in 1996. While this was much lower than the BU version, there is typically a big divide in mintage between the two. The 1996 Proof Silver Eagle actually had the lowest margin in mintage between BU and Proof, with the BU coin selling just 3.1 million coins more than the Proof coin.
