Obverse

An indigenous American figure is shown in the obverse design of the 2006-W Proof American Gold Buffalo Coin. This tribal figure is shown in right-profile relief with feathers woven into his braided hair. This design was created by James Earle Fraser by combining the facial characteristics of three real-world tribal elders from the early 20^th century.

Reverse

An American bison features on the reverse side of 2006 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo Coins. North Americas largest living land mammal, the bison was a staple of the American Plains and vital to the survival and culture of indigenous tribes from the plains. Fraser turned to Black Diamond, a bison living at the Central Park Zoo in the 20^th century, for inspiration for this design.

James Earle Frasers 1913 Buffalo Nickel design is the inspiration for the American Gold Buffalo. Frasers designs were widely popular and came at a time when American coinage was undergoing a design renaissance.
