Obverse

In the obverse design of the 2023 American Gold Eagle, you will find a front-facing effigy of Lady Liberty. This 1907 design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens captures the full-length figure of Liberty with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The background includes sun rays, the U.S. Capitol Building, and a ring of stars.

Reverse

For the reverse design element of 2023 1/2 oz Gold Eagle Coins, the US Mint features its new bald eagle design for just the third time overall. Introduced in mid-2021, this image shows the head of the bald eagle in left-profile relief with detailed visuals for the physical features of the national symbol.

History

Jennie Norris is the designer of the new Gold Eagle reverse design. She created this image in 2020 and it debuted during the 35^th anniversary of the series in 2021.
