Obverse
The coin’s obverse side is dominated by the iconic image of Lady Liberty striding toward the rising sun, a US flag fluttering over her shoulder and an olive branch cradled in the crook of her left arm. This is accompanied by inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1944.”
Reverse
A bald eagle rises from its mountaintop perch on the coin’s reverse side, accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “HALF DOLLAR.”
History
When Robert W. Woolley came to the office of Mint Engraver in 1915, he discovered a legal restriction that compelled him to replace coinage that had been in production for a period of 25 years. This prompted him to contact the Commission of Fine Arts to seek out designers for a range of new dimes, quarters, and half dollars, and one of the artists thus commissioned was the well-known sculptor and medallist Adolph Weinman, who had studied under famous names like Augustus St. Gaudens.
