Obverse

Lady Liberty is on the obverse side of 1989 American Gold Eagles. This design was created in 1907 for the $20 Gold Double Eagle by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and shows Libertys full-length figure in front-facing relief as she strides forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.

Reverse

An American bald eagle family is depicted in the reverse design of 1989 1/2 oz Gold Eagles. This image was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek and used exclusively on the Gold Eagle Coins. In this design, a male eagle soars over the nest with a family unit depicted in the nest below.

History

The 1989 1/2 oz Gold Eagle had the lowest mintage in the series for this date mark. It was nearly 1/10^th the mintage of the 1 oz coin, 1/4^th the mintage of the 1/10 oz coin, and half that of the 1/4 oz coin.
