This early release allowed the Royal Mint to continue its traditional production schedule while both honoring Her Majesty for a final time and creating a new King Charles III obverse. Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 British Gold Britannia Coin features a depiction of King Charles III. His Majesty is shown here in left-profile relief in the first-ever effigy of the new monarch. It was created by Martin Jennings in late 2022 and replaces the effigy of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on the obverse of British coinage.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2023 1/4 oz Gold Britannia Coins, you will find Britannia. This bust of the allegorical female is shown in front-facing relief as she looks to the right. Her right hand clutches a trident while her left rests on a Union Jack shield.
History
Over the course of its history, the Britannia Series has featured three different portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, but never one of a different monarch. With the Queen’s passing in September 2022, the time has come for a new monarch’s portrait on the obverse.
