Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2023 Canadian Smilodon Sabre-Tooth Tiger Silver Coin is one of the final appearances of Queen Elizabeth II on Canadian coinage. This image shows the Queen in right-profile relief in a 2003 design by Susanna Blunt. The fourth-generation effigy of the Queen, this portrait is the last of Her Late Majesty to grace Canadian coins.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2023 2 oz Smilodon Sabre-Tooth Tiger Silver Coins comes with a depiction of the Ice Age beast. The sabre-tooth is shown in front-facing relief as it lunges at its target. Whether that target is its prey or a prehistoric human threatening it, we’ll never know. One thing is certain: this beast is fearsome.
History
Sabre-tooth tigers had a similar body structure to modern tigers, according to the fossil record, but did have distinguishing features to separate the two. The most notable are the massive upper canine teeth, but the sabre-tooth also had a much shorter tail. Each of these coins comes with radial lines on both sides, with an additional micro-engraved maple leaf privy on the reverse.
