History
The American Gold Eagle’s design has its roots in the Double Eagle gold piece, produced from 1907 to 1933. This coin, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to beautify American coinage. Saint-Gaudens’ creation was a high-relief coin that remains one of the most celebrated designs. The U.S. Mint began the American Gold Eagle series in 1986, offering coins that appeal to both investors and collectors.
