Obverse

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1906-D Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin, you’ll find the heraldic eagle design from the Type II era in this series, complete with the national motto above the eagle.

History

Beyond their significance as a Denver Mint issue, these coins hold a unique distinction as part of the Fairmont Collection. Thousands of US Eagles, including $10 Eagles and $5 Half Eagles, found their way to Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries through international commerce. Many of these coins sat in European banks for decades before being discovered in the 2010s and repatriated to the United States as part of the Fairmont Collection.

The year 1906 was a significant time for the United States Mint, considering new designs for its major circulation coinage, including the iconic $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle. Struck for the penultimate time that year, these coins hold a special place in American history, with only one further issue to come in 1907. What sets the 1906-D Liberty Gold Half Eagles apart is the distinct “D” mint mark, indicating their production at the Denver Mint. This was a historic moment, as 1906 marked the inaugural year of coin production at the Denver Mint, making these coins some of the first ever minted there. With a mintage of only 320,000 coins, these Denver Mint coins are exceptionally scarce, especially when compared to the mintage of Philadelphia and San Francisco mints that year.
