In 1904, the renowned “Morgan dollar” silver coin series came to an end, marking a significant year for the New Orlean Mint. It was the year when the final batch of Morgan coins was struck in the Mint, which would later be unearthed in a massive hoard of nearly three million uncirculated silver dollars. Obverse

At the forefront of the obverse field, an imposing effigy of Lady Liberty donning a Phrygian cap takes center stage, accompanied by the engravings “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1904.” Encircling the rim of the design are thirteen embellished stars, symbolizing the original founding states of America.

Reverse

On the reverse field, a heraldic eagle clutches a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, alongside the “O” mint mark and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

The New Orleans Mint had one of the longest histories striking the Morgan Silver Dollar. The mint resumed its post-Civil War production in 1879, the second year for the Morgan Silver Dollar. It would strike Morgans annually through 1904, the final year of annual production for Morgan Dollars. The mint later closed in 1908.
