Obverse

Depicted on the front of the 2001 Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins is John Mercanti’s design of the Statue of Liberty’s face. The American Eagle Series, launched in 1997, features this iconic image of the New York Harbor statue on its obverse.

On the reverse of the 2001 1/2 oz Proof Platinum Eagles, you will see an image of the American bald eagle. The Vistas of Liberty series showcases the eagle soaring over various regions of the nation. This particular design highlights the eagle’s flight over saguaro cactus in the American Southwest and is the second-to-last design in the series.

History

The 2001 release in the Proof American Platinum Eagle Series featured the image of the eagle over a saguaro cactus in the American Southwest. This design was created by Thomas D. Rogers, the artist behind the static reverse design of the BU coin and the first design on the Proof coin. Rogers also created the 1998 design for the Proof Series.
