History

In his Theogony, Hesiod claims that Medusa and her sisters were Gorgons. This word means something like fierce or terrible and is often associated with a creature bearing a head full of snakes. Hesiod also describes the fate of Medusa at the hands of Perseus, who cuts off her head using a sword called Harpe. This act of violence led to the birth of both Chrysaor and the winged horse Pegasus.
