Obverse

In the obverse design of the 1990 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin, you will find a depiction of the Great Pipe Organ. The third organ installed in the Musikverein, this structure has been in the concert hall since the first decade of the 1900s.

Reverse

For the reverse design of the 1990 1 oz Gold Philharmonic Coin, the Austrian Mint depicts a collection of musical instruments. Included in the design are the cello, violin, bassoon, harp, and horn.

History

The orchestra is particularly well-known for its annual New Year’s Day concert, which has been broadcast around the world since 1959. The concert features a selection of popular waltzes, polkas, and marches by Johann Strauss II and his contemporaries, and has become a beloved tradition for millions of people around the globe.
