Designed by John Mercanti in 1986 specifically for the American Silver Eagle series, the reverse field of the 2010 coins showcases the heraldic eagle, a motif that has graced American coins since 1795. This modern interpretation depicts the bald eagle facing forward while holding the US national shield.

History

In 2010, the Silver Eagle set a third straight sales record following the impressive performances of the 2008 and 2009 date marks. The 2010 coin had a mintage 14 million coins higher than the 2008 coin and just 4 million higher than the 2009 coin. The record didnt last long though as the 2011 coin surged to 40 million coins.
