The all-new portrait of King Charles III takes center stage on the obverse of the 2023 British Gold Merlin Coins. Created by Martin Jennings, this left-profile bust depicts the new monarch without a crown and is the first portrait of Charles III to appear on British coins during his reign, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Reverse

The mythical sorcerer Merlin is brought to life on the reverse side of the 2023 1 oz Gold Merlin Coin, with a striking depiction by David Lawrence. Merlin is shown draped in robes, holding a mystical staff in his left hand, and with an owl perched on his right shoulder.

History

In some versions of the story, Merlin’s role in Camelot goes beyond that of a mere advisor. He is depicted as a visionary who foresaw the downfall of the kingdom and tried to prevent it, often using his magical powers to manipulate events and people in order to steer them toward the path of righteousness. However, despite his efforts, Camelot ultimately fell, and Merlin himself was trapped in a cave, left to sleep until the kingdom should once again have need of his wisdom and power.
