Obverse

In the obverse design of the 1985 Chinese Gold Panda Coin, you will find the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests was originally constructed in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and served as a place of worship for emperors to offer prayers for a bountiful harvest. The structure holds great symbolic significance, representing the relationship between heaven and earth in traditional Chinese beliefs.

Reverse

For the reverse design of 1985 1/2 oz Gold Panda Coins, the mint features a playful image of a Giant Panda cub. In this years design, the cub is shown clinging to a bamboo branch in left-profile relief.

History

Giant pandas are solitary animals, spending a significant portion of their time alone. They have large home ranges that they mark with scent to communicate their presence to other pandas. Males have larger territories that overlap with several females’ ranges. Despite being solitary, pandas do come together during the breeding season.
