Obverse

The obverse design of the 1987 Chinese Gold Panda presents a remarkable depiction of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. Situated within the Temple of Heaven Complex, located in the south-central part of Beijing, this image portrays the exterior of the building, with the main staircase leading to the primary entrance doors.

Reverse

On the reverse face of the 1987 1/2 oz Gold Panda Coins, you’ll be captivated by a mesmerizing portrayal of a Giant Panda. This year’s design showcases a full-length relief of the panda, captured in a left-profile pose as it gracefully bends down to drink from a serene body of water.

History

Chinese Gold Panda coins debuted just three years after the 1979 introduction of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. The coin became the third option available to investors behind the Maple Leaf and the Gold Krugerrand, the latter of which was introduced in 1967. The Gold Panda debuted before the likes of the American Eagle, Australian Nugget/Kangaroo, British Britannia, and the Austrian Philharmonic in the 1980s.
