The reverse feature of 1991-S Proof American Silver Eagles depicts the heraldic eagle image designed by John Mercanti. This design shows the eagle with its wings out and the nations shield on its chest. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ, FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR, S, E PLURIBUS UNUM.

History

This iconic coin program has been struck at three different mints in its history. Starting in San Francisco, then moving to Philadelphia, before finding its home at the West Point Mint. Even with the 1991 proof version featuring a record-low mintage at the time, it remains one of the most popular coin programs in the world.
