History

George Plantagenet, the 1st Duke of Clarence, was executed in 1478 under mysterious circumstances. He was accused of treason and was allegedly drowned in a butt of Malmsey wine. The story of his execution gave rise to the phrase “to drown in Malmsey” as a euphemism for betrayal.
