Obverse

On the obverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, Lady Liberty is shown with a Phrygian cap and crown of wheat. For this design, George T. Morgan had Philadelphia school teacher Anna Williams sit five times until the portrait was perfected. The obverse also includes inscriptions reading 1881, E Pluribus Unum.

Reverse

The reverse of 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollars depicts an American eagle in flight. As it soars with wide-spread wings, youll notice the bird holds arrows and a single olive branch in its talons. Traditionally, this imagery has been symbolic of Americas wars and her ongoing commitment to peace.

History

From 1878-1921, the Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at five different branches of the U.S. Mint. In addition to San Francisco, the other branches included Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and Denver. Of those five branches, the Carson City and New Orleans locations are no longer in operation.
