Obverse

For the obverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins Lady Liberty is depicted in portrait. This rendering shows Liberty with a Phrygian cap, which symbolizes freedom. She also wears a crown of wheat and a band inscribed with the word Liberty.

Reverse

For the reverse of 1882-S Morgan Silver Dollars a bald eagle motif is shown. This design memorably captures the bird mid-flight as it looks left while holding arrows and an olive branch. The reverse includes the San Francisco mintmark along with a pair of decorative laurels.

History

In 1854, the U.S. Mint opened a new branch in San Francisco. Four years prior, a gold deposit at Sutters Mill in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range led to the California Gold Rush. The mint was opened specifically to strike coins from the gold mined there. The San Francisco Mint began striking silver coins as well with the arrival of the Morgan Silver Dollar in 1878.
