Obverse
On the obverse field of each 1885 Silver Dollar Coin, you’ll find George T. Morgan’s timeless artwork of Lady Liberty, depicted in left-profile relief. The design also includes 13 stars representing the original colonies. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1885.
Reverse
George T. Morgan’s artistry extends to the reverse of each 1885 Morgan Dollar Coin, featuring a majestic bald eagle, about to take off, holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. Beneath the eagle, decorative laurels are tied together by a ribbon. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
Two future Chief Engravers of the United States Mint were tasked with creating designs for these coins. Ultimately, the work of George T. Morgan was selected. Interestingly, Morgan’s Liberty design was inspired by a Philadelphia school teacher named Anna Williams, while the coins were named after the 7th Chief Engraver of the US Mint.
