History
The production of Liberty Gold Half Eagles spanned nearly 70 years of American history from 1839 to 1908. Before the Civil War, these coins were struck by various branches of the US Mint, including Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, and San Francisco. After the Civil War, production was primarily carried out by the Philadelphia and San Francisco branches. By the mid-1880s, the San Francisco Mint was at the forefront, producing Liberty Gold Half Eagles at a rate ten times higher than the Philadelphia Mint for the year 1886.
