Obverse

The obverse side of the 1852-C Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin proudly displays Christian Gobrecht’s iconic Lady Liberty design, featuring a left-profile bust adorned with a coronet crown and encircled by 13 radiant stars. Inscriptions include 1852, and LIBERTY.

Reverse

Turning to the reverse of each 1852-C $5 Liberty Half Eagle Coin, you’ll encounter Christian Gobrecht’s heraldic eagle design, depicting the majestic bald eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The national shield proudly adorns its chest. Inscriptions read C, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE D.

History

The presence of the “C” mint mark on these coins tells a unique story of their creation at the historic Charlotte Mint in North Carolina. Following the initial gold discovery in America, the Reed Gold Mine emerged as the nation’s very first gold mine. However, with no local mints in North Carolina, gold had to be transported all the way to Philadelphia for coining. Thus, in 1838, the Charlotte Mint was established, solely dedicated to producing gold coinage.
