Obverse
The obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar showcases a bust of Lady Liberty, designed by George T. Morgan in 1878. It features Liberty’s head in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap at the back. She also wears a coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1879 Morgan Silver Dollars, you’ll find Morgan’s rendition of the heraldic eagle. This eagle lacks a US national shield but depicts the front-facing bald eagle with wings spread, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
History
Mintage numbers for 1879 varied. Philadelphia produced 14.8 million coins, while San Francisco saw a slight drop to 9.110 million from the previous year. Carson City Mint had a significant decrease from 2.212 million to 756,000 in 1879.
