On the reverse side of the 1879 Morgan Silver Dollars, you’ll find Morgan’s rendition of the heraldic eagle. This eagle lacks a US national shield but depicts the front-facing bald eagle with wings spread, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
History
Mintage numbers for 1879 varied. Philadelphia produced 14.8 million coins, while San Francisco saw a slight drop to 9.110 million from the previous year. Carson City Mint had a significant decrease from 2.212 million to 756,000 in 1879. However, the addition of 2.887 million coins from New Orleans significantly boosted overall production in 1879 compared to 1878.
