Obverse
The obverse of the 2005 5 oz Proof Gold George T. Morgan Round showcases a captivating image of a capped Liberty seated on a rock in right-profile relief. With an olive branch in her left hand and a scepter in her right, wheat stalks and a sailing vessel complete the picturesque scene.
Reverse
On the reverse design of the 2005 Proof Gold $100 Union George T. Morgan Rounds, witness Morgan’s other sketch for the $100 Union. The American bald eagle takes center stage with outstretched wings, talons clutching the US national shield, three arrows, and an olive branch.
History
In the 19th century, the US Mint had plans for proof coins in a new $50 denomination named Half Unions. Morgan’s sketch of the capped bust, seated Liberty was proposed for the $100 Union but never made it into proof or circulation. Now, these designs find their way onto these gold rounds, bringing Morgan’s long-lost sketches to life. Morgan went on to have a long career at the U.S. Mint, eventually becoming the Chief Engraver in 1917, a position he held until his death in 1925.
