Reverse
On the reverse side, de Francisci’s masterful design features a serene bald eagle perched upon a rock, clutching an olive branchan enduring emblem of peace. Sunrays cascade in the background, evoking a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
History
This coin series holds profound historical significance, marking the end of an era for circulating silver dollars in the United States. Enacted in 1918, the Pittman Act authorized the melting and recoining of millions of silver dollars to help the British government replenish its silver reserves after World War I. Many Morgan silver dollars were melted down as a result. After a one-year strike of Morgans in 1921 to resume silver dollar production, the Peace Dollar went into production in December 1921 as the final circulating silver dollar.
