1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin Open 3 NGC XF40
Product Description
The Double Eagle was the highest denomination of gold coins ever issued by the United States for circulation. Introduced in 1850, the $20 Double Eagle emerged as the United States Treasury accumulated gold from the California Gold Rush. The Liberty Head design was the first of two used on this denomination and remained in use the longest. Now, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins with an Open 3 are available from BGASC.

Obverse
The obverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins features a design by James B. Longacre. This left-facing portrait of Liberty shows her wearing a coronet crown, with 13 stars encircling her. The date mark is at the bottom of the design.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1873 Pre-33 Gold Double Eagles, youll find the Great Seal of the United States. This includes a heraldic eagle with a national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. Above the eagle, a ring of 13 stars incorporates the national motto.
History
The 1873 Liberty Gold Double Eagles were produced with both Open 3 and Closed 3 date styles. The Open 3 design has more space between the top and bottom of the number 3 in the 1873 date. In total, the Philadelphia Mint produced 1,709,800 of these coins in 1873, the most among the three mints that year, surpassing the totals at the Carson City Mint and the San Francisco Mint.
