Obverse

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873-S $20 Double Eagle Coin depicts the Great Seal of the United States. Longacres design presents a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, holding the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Above the eagles head is a ring of 13 stars and the national motto.

History

The Double Eagle series is unique with just two designs throughout its circulation. Unlike other US Eagle denominations that started in 1794/95 and saw early design changes, the Double Eagle began in 1850 and retained Longacre’s design until 1907, followed by Saint-Gaudens’ design from 1907 to 1933.
