Obverse

On the obverse of the 1873-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, you will find a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty. She wears a coronet crown, and 13 stars surround her along the edge of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagles showcases Longacres distinctive heraldic eagle design, known as the Great Seal of the United States. It features a front-facing eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the US national shield on its chest. Above the eagle, a ring of 13 stars and the national motto are engraved.

History

The Double Eagle, introduced in 1850, required a new design from James B. Longacre, who was the Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He was inspired by Christian Gobrechts designs on other Eagle coins, while adding his own touches to the Liberty figure and creating a unique reverse design. The US Mint struck these coins in 1873 at the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. These San Francisco specimens were among more than 1.04 million coins issued by this branch mint.
