2024 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin PCGS MS69 FS
Product Description
In 2021, the United States Mint marked a historic centennial for its iconic silver dollars. The Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar were the final circulating silver dollar designs in the US. In an unusual shift, both designs were minted in the same year, 1921, as the US Mint transitioned from the Morgan Dollar to the new Peace Dollar. Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 Morgan Silver Dollars features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Created in 1878, this Greco-Roman image shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with a coronet crown and laurel wreath.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2024 Morgan Dollar Coin showcases another of Morgans designs. This version of the heraldic eagle depicts a front-facing American bald eagle with outspread wings, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
History
In 1904, the United States Mint ceased production of silver dollars for circulation, ending the Morgan Dollar series. In 1918, Congress passed legislation to restart silver dollar coining, but production didn’t resume until 1921. When it did, the Morgan Dollar design was chosen to lead the way. George T. Morgan, the original designer, was the 7th Chief Engraver in 1921 and had to recreate his original dies from 1878 for the new coins. The Morgan Dollar was minted until mid-December 1921, when the Peace Dollar design was ready for production.
