Reverse

History

The number of claws on a dragon’s foot was strictly regulated in imperial China. Five-clawed dragons were reserved exclusively for the emperor and his immediate family. Four-clawed dragons were used by nobility and certain high-ranking officials. Three-clawed dragons were for lower ranks and general decorative purposes. This hierarchical system was so important that using the wrong number of claws could be considered treasonous.
