Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 British Gold Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon Coins features a bust of King Charles III. Created for The Royal Mint in late 2022, this portrait shows His Majesty in left-profile relief, without a crown.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2024 1 oz Gold Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon, you will find the image of the Tudor Dragon. The design depicts the seated Tudor Dragon supporting a shield with the Beaufort Portcullis, both symbols used by the House of Tudor to legitimize their claim to the throne after the Wars of the Roses. Henry VII incorporated the portcullis motif extensively in the architecture of his royal buildings. It can be seen in stone carvings and decorations at Richmond Palace and other Tudor residences.
History
The Tudor Dragon holds great significance and is often shown with the Beaufort Portcullis in Tudor heraldry. The Royal Mint’s design features a shield with the Beaufort Portcullis, a symbol originally associated with the Beaufort family. The Tudor version of the portcullis was typically depicted as a gold (or sometimes silver) latticed gate with spikes at the bottom and chains on either side. It was often shown with the Tudor rose or other royal emblems.
