1907-D Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin PCGS MS64
Product Description
In 1907, the United States Mint saw a significant shift in the design of its $20 Gold Double Eagle coins. James B. Longacres Liberty Head design had been featured on these coins since 1850. However, in the middle of 1907, a new design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens would replace it. The Denver Mint struck the last Liberty Head Double Eagles early that year. Obverse
The obverse of the 1907-D $20 Liberty Double Eagle features Lady Liberty in profile. She wears a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY, and the design includes 13 stars around her, symbolizing the original 13 colonies. The date 1907 is below her portrait.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1907-D Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, a powerful American bald eagle is depicted. The eagles wings are outstretched, and it holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. As a Type III coin, this design also includes the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the eagle, and the denomination is marked as TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
The final year of the Liberty Head design saw coins produced by the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints. For the Denver Mint, this was only the second time it issued the Liberty Double Eagle. The series had been in production for over 50 years, but by mid-1907, the Saint-Gaudens design was set to take over.
