Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2024 Reverse Proof Mexican Silver Libertads, you’ll find 11 renditions of Mexico’s coat of arms. Surrounding the central design are 10 historic versions of the national seal, with the 1524 Codex Mendoza emblem prominently displayed at the top. The center showcases a golden eagle, snake, and prickly pear cactus.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2024 2 oz Reverse Proof Silver Libertad Coins presents Winged Victory, who holds a laurel wreath and broken chains, set against the backdrop of the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl mountains.

History

In the Codex Mendoza’s representation, the eagle and cactus are situated on a stone or small island in the middle of a lake, symbolizing the location of Tenochtitlan in Lake Texcoco. The emblem is surrounded by ten founders of the city, represented by their name glyphs. The image is rich in symbolism, with the eagle representing the sun god Huitzilopochtli, the snake symbolizing wisdom or perhaps defeated enemies, and the cactus representing the heart of captured warriors.
