Product Description

The D-Day landings, known as Operation Overlord, occurred on June 6, 1944, marking a pivotal moment in World War II. This massive Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France was the largest amphibious assault in history, involving soldiers from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. To honor the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in 2024, Merrick Mint released these $2 World War II D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Notes, now available at BGASC.

These $2 World War II D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Notes come in a blue presentation folio, making them a great keepsake. Each note retains the traditional reverse design, while the obverse features colorized, photorealistic images of Allied troops landing at Normandy.

Obverse

On the obverse of the $2 D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Note, you’ll see President Thomas Jefferson in the center. The background on either side shows scenes of troops landing on D-Day. The invasion targeted five beaches along the Normandy coast: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Omaha Beach, in particular, saw some of the heaviest fighting as Allied forces faced stiff resistance from German troops who had fortified the coastline with various defenses.

Reverse

The reverse side of the note showcases John Trumbulls 1818 painting, the Declaration of Independence. This iconic artwork is prominently displayed on the reverse side of the U.S. $2 bill and depicts the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress on June 28, 1776, featuring 42 of the 56 signers.

History

The success of the Normandy landings opened a crucial second front against Nazi Germany in Western Europe. This operation, combined with the Soviet offensive on the Eastern Front, marked the beginning of the end for Hitler’s Third Reich. The D-Day invasion remains one of the most significant military operations in history, remembered for its scale, complexity, and the courage of those who participated.
