Obverse

On the obverse of the 1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles is a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, Liberty is shown with her hair tied back in a bun, wearing a coronet crown, and surrounded by 13 stars with the date at the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse side features the Great Seal of the United States, a design that went through three iterations from 1850 to 1907. The 1878-S coin includes the Type III design, which changed the denomination inscription from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.

History

After the California Gold Rush, the U.S. Mint expanded its gold coin offerings, leading to the creation of the Double Eagle. This coin was struck with the Liberty Head design from 1850 until 1907, after which it featured the Saint-Gaudens design until the series ended in 1933.
